Postage stamps were invented and first produced in England at the printing works of Perkins, Bacon & Petch later to be called Perkins, Bacon from 1852. It was not long before the collection of stamps became an interest and later a hobby. Once a collecting hobby becomes established the need for books describing it and explaining the method of production of the collectable artefacts is created.

Two of the works in this collection (The Postage and Telegraph Stamps of Great Britain, Frederick A Philbrick and William A S Westoby, 1881 and The Adhesive Stamps of the British Isles, Hastings E Wright and A B Creek Jr., 1899) went some way to supplying early catalogues. It is no exaggeration to describe them as the incunabula of philatelic publication.
